Thangkas

These thangkas, which means literally 'scroll cloth painting' are original, authentic paintings created by the lineage of devout Buddhists whose family have been thangka painters for nine generations. They are committed to retain the quality and authenticity of these sacred paintings which are extremely rare to find these days. The thangkas of Windhorse Gallery are of absolute superior quality and have been created using only pigments of natural crushed gems and minerals including pure gold and silver. They are perfectly balanced and can be used as inspirational, meditational devices. After a consecrational ceremony, the sacred prayer ‘Om Ha Hum’ is written on the reverse of each thangka, representing the absolute enlightenment of the body, speech and mind. These are three very important ‘doorways’ as these are the ways in which we communicate ourselves to life. The prayer serves as a reminder to us to remain aware of how we act through these doorways. In addition it illustrates the enlightenment of the depicted deity; all that is spoken, thought and moved through them is that of absolute purity. This prayer has been inscribed by a lama who blesses the painting and invites the depicted deity to inhabit the painting thereby becoming a living extension of the Buddha, Boddhisattva, Protecive Deity or Goddess. To read more on thangkas and for in depth descriptions on the Mandala, as well as the different deities go to ‘reference.’

*note: The size of each thangka describes the painting itself, excluding any frame or brocade. Please contact us if you wish to know further details.
